In October, PureStream focused on optimizing large library scanning, third-party ecosystem compatibility, the home server Web interface, and remote access security. For music enthusiasts, smooth management of massive collections and reliable listening anytime, anywhere are essential.
⚡️ Scanning Performance Breakthrough: High-Speed Auditing and Smooth Ingestion for Massive Libraries
When dealing with massive libraries stored on high-capacity external mechanical hard drives (such as 10TB with 500,000 tracks), previous scans repeatedly read deep into each file during verification, causing severe disk thrashing and long waiting times.
This month, we completely re-architected the music library scanning mechanism:
- Fast-path skip for unchanged files: Scanning now introduces fast-path comparison. As long as file size and modification time match, the system skips the file directly without reopening it, re-reading audio tags, or recalculating content fingerprints.
- Scanning time substantially reduced: Under our test machine environment, scanning speeds for libraries with tens of thousands of tracks saw significant improvements (actual time varies depending on hardware and file counts):
| Library Scale & Scenario | Optimized Duration (Reference) | Performance & Experience |
|---|---|---|
| 47,500 tracks steady-state rescan | ~0.9 s | Finishes instantly with virtually no redundant disk reads |
| 32,000 tracks initial scan | ~65 s | Lighter and faster audio parsing |
| 47,500 tracks initial scan | ~3 min | Consistently smooth and orderly I/O throughout |
- Predictable progress feedback: The scan page displays real-time processed, playable, failed counts, and estimated remaining time. When mounting multiple folders, it clearly indicates “Folder N of M”. Failed files support preview and categorization, and scan health can also be checked directly from the system tray.
- Fix for large directory finalization failure: Previously, in very large single directories containing 47,500 files, background wait logic during the finalization stage had an issue causing scans to be falsely marked as failed after all files had been processed. After the fix, similar large directories finalize reliably.
🌐 Full Compatibility with Third-Party Subsonic Clients
To give everyone the freedom to choose their favorite playback tools, PureStream has comprehensively enhanced compatibility with the third-party Subsonic client ecosystem:
- Seamless connection with mainstream clients: Verified with multiple clients including Feishin and Amperfy, supporting music browsing, search, favorites, and smooth playback.
- Faster response and streamlined transfer: Root directory loading time for a 10,000-track library dropped significantly from ~1.3 seconds to ~40 milliseconds; data transfer payload for massive favorites lists was reduced to approximately 1/12 of before.
- Independent isolation for multiple audio sources: Albums and artists sharing identical names across different music sources are now indexed independently, preventing them from overwriting each other.
🎨 Refined Web Interface Upgrade for Home Server
The home server Web interface has undergone a new round of visual restructuring:
- Gentle color palette: Dark mode now uses softer, warm-neutral background tones, reducing visual fatigue during extended browsing sessions.
- Cover-led and streamlined layout: The album wall is led by record covers with redundant card borders removed; track lists are cleaner and more readable.
- Clear navigation structure: The desktop sidebar has been reorganized into “Music Library / Now Playing / Management”, defaulting directly into the album library while keeping the status page readily accessible. On mobile widths, it automatically switches to bottom navigation.
- Ergonomic playback bar: The playback progress bar is placed snugly against the top, folding into a two-line layout on small screens, with slider touch targets kept at 44 pixels or larger to prevent accidental touches.
- Multi-screen verification: 11 core pages were thoroughly inspected across dark/light modes and desktop/mobile widths, with zero horizontal overflow or front-end errors.
🔐 More Stable Remote Access, More Secure Playback Accounts
- Automated subscription reconciliation: App Store and Microsoft Store subscriptions are automatically reconciled daily, syncing refunds, cancellations, and expirations more promptly and accurately.
- Gentle entitlement handling: Subscription status changes are only logged and flagged, never abruptly interrupting music currently playing; device deauthorization remains strictly manual by administrators.
- Second-level device rebinding: When rebinding or switching devices, a single operation cleans up old authorizations and issues new ones, eliminating the “Please try again later” prompt.
- Online status awareness: The home server periodically reports online status, making it easy to confirm device connectivity from the management panel.
- Dual playback device support: A single household supports two playback devices connected concurrently by default (such as Mac paired with iPhone).
- Hardened account security: The server no longer stores playback account passwords. Players acquire one-time temporary credentials directly from the home server via device authorization and discard them immediately after use. Differentiated error messages are now provided for unreachable networks, binding failures, and expired authorizations, rather than a generic “Connection failed”.
🖥 Desktop Experience and Runtime Polishing
- Launch on startup: The tray menu now officially supports configuring launch on system startup.
- Silent session redirect: When a session expires, it redirects directly back to the login page, removing the “Session expired” popup.
- Native audio parsing: Audio tag parsing now uses a native static library instead of compiling parsing components on the fly at runtime, making startup and scanning noticeably lighter.
- Comprehensive runtime logging: System crash and anomalous request logging have been added to facilitate prompt troubleshooting of potential issues.
- File filtering and intuitive status: System hidden files and junk entries are skipped by default; processed, playable, and failed metrics can be viewed directly in the tray.
📌 Known Issues and Next Steps
The following issues are currently being addressed in this version:
- Scanning performance across certain external hard drives, network shares, and Windows devices is still being verified; actual speeds will be affected by hardware and file counts.
- Screen reader announcements on the scan page are being improved, and text labels for certain failure categories are still being filled out.
- Microsoft Store subscription scenarios such as refunds and cancellations will undergo expanded validation.
Next, we will continue completing validation for external hard drives, network shares, and Windows devices, finalize accessibility announcements and failure category descriptions, and expand the coverage of subscription reconciliation scenarios.
