Feature set
Local Library Scanning and Indexing
Select one or multiple local folders on your computer, including external hard drives or NAS shares mounted as local system paths. PureStream recursively reads embedded tags, folder artwork, and lyrics files entirely on-device, never modifying your originals without permission.
Subsonic and OpenSubsonic Compatibility
Designed around the open Subsonic and OpenSubsonic API standards. It is the dedicated streaming backend for the iOS companion player PurePlayer; other clients that support the standard can connect, with available features depending on the endpoints they use.
Original-Quality Local Streaming
On home and office local networks, PureStream streams the original audio files directly to your player by default. There is no resampling or quality loss, preserving the original detail of Hi-Res, FLAC, ALAC, and DSD tracks.
On-Demand Real-Time Transcoding
When bandwidth is constrained or a client has specific format requirements, the server transcodes audio on the fly into formats such as MP3, Opus, AAC, or FLAC. Transcoded streams are managed by an efficient local cache that invalidates automatically when source files change.
Scalable Architecture and Incremental Scans
The indexing engine is built for large music collections, with paging and filtering that stay responsive as the library grows. Incremental scans and file-system watching catch new additions quickly; a scan can be cancelled and resumed, so an interruption does not damage the existing index.
Web Admin Console and Web Player
Includes a clean single-user web management interface and a lightweight web player in your browser for folder setup, library browsing, album detail inspection, and sanitized logs. First-time setup requires creating an administrator password with HttpOnly session protection.
PIN Pairing and Device Management
Pair devices on your home Wi-Fi network using a time-limited 6-digit PIN code without registering an account. The administration console provides an overview of authorized players, allowing you to easily unbind or revoke offline devices whenever needed.
Pure Tunnel Remote Access (In Development)
Secure direct network tunnels powered by WireGuard allow your mobile phone to connect back to your home music server from anywhere. Enjoy remote listening without buying domain names, configuring public IPs, or opening router ports. (Feature currently in active development)
Subscriptions and Family Groups (Planned)
Subscriptions and multi-device family sharing are planned for convenient management through the Mac App Store and Microsoft Store. Subscriptions unlock remote connection capabilities, while basic local network streaming remains completely free. (Details subject to store release)
Privacy-First Local Processing
The software includes no third-party advertising SDKs, behavioral telemetry, or user analytics tracking. The cloud control plane handles only essential device identifiers and subscription authorizations, never touching or observing your audio content.
In depth
What is PureStream?
PureStream is a single-user local music server running on your Mac or Windows personal computer, designed to put music collectors fully in charge of their personal libraries. It serves as the streaming backbone of Efficient Lab’s Pure music ecosystem:
- PureLab: desktop workstation for deep metadata organization, tag normalization, CJK conversion, and safe writeback;
- PureStream: desktop background service that indexes multiple music folders, serves standard Subsonic APIs, streams untouched audio locally, and handles on-demand transcoding;
- PurePlayer: mobile companion app on iOS that connects to PureStream for high-resolution listening anywhere.
PureStream adheres strictly to single-user ownership and local-first architecture. It does not rely on third-party cloud storage or aggregate web disks, providing a clean, distraction-free, and always-available core for your high-fidelity music collection.
A Complete Listening Workflow
From the initial installation to listening on your phone wherever you go, the entire experience is designed to be frictionless:
- Add Music Folders: Select one or more local folders containing your audio files, including locally mounted NAS shares or external drives;
- Build the Local Index: The server recursively scans tags and artwork to build an instant search index, with cancel-and-resume support for large collections;
- Original-Quality Local Playback: Launch PurePlayer or any Subsonic client on the same Wi-Fi network and enjoy original-quality streaming straight from your machine;
- Quick PIN Pairing: When you want remote access, generate a temporary 6-digit PIN in the web console and enter it on your player to securely pair the device;
- Encrypted Listening on the Go: Listen outside the home over a direct end-to-end encrypted tunnel, with automatic adaptive transcoding keeping music smooth over mobile data.
Transcoding and Network Adaptation
To accommodate varying network conditions and audio gear, PureStream provides a flexible negotiation mechanism that balances fidelity and smooth playback:
| Scenario | Delivery Strategy | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Local Network | Untouched direct stream | Zero resampling and zero lossy compression, preserving the original detail |
| Stable Remote Network | High-quality live transcoding | Encodes lossless audio on the fly into high-bitrate streams for optimal balance |
| Mobile Cellular Network | Adaptive bandwidth transcoding | Uses efficient compression profiles to prevent buffering on constrained connections |
| User Manual Preference | Locked format and bitrate | Manually select a preferred streaming codec or force uncompressed streaming |
All transcoded output is managed by a local server-side cache with automatic LRU eviction. Whenever a source file or tag is updated, corresponding cached files are invalidated immediately so you always hear the most up-to-date audio.
Privacy and Data Boundaries
At Efficient Lab, we believe your personal music collection and listening history belong solely to you:
- Music Remains Strictly Local: Your audio files, artwork, lyrics, playback records, and search queries reside exclusively on your computer and are never uploaded to central servers;
- Zero-Account Design: No email address, username, or phone number is ever requested; you never have to register an identity just to enjoy your music;
- Minimal Control Plane: Our cloud control plane only assists with time-limited PIN pairing, service heartbeats, and app store subscription entitlement verification;
- End-to-End Encrypted Tunnels: Remote connections use modern WireGuard technology for point-to-point encryption; future relay nodes handle only encrypted payloads and cannot inspect audio content;
- No Advertising or Telemetry: PureStream contains zero third-party advertising SDKs, tracking pixels, or user behavior analytics.

FAQ
Do I need a public IP address or a custom domain?
Not at all. On your local home network, player apps discover and connect to PureStream directly over LAN. For remote listening away from home, PureStream establishes secure point-to-point tunnels powered by WireGuard, eliminating the need for dynamic public IPs or port forwarding on your router.
Which audio formats are supported?
PureStream supports most popular formats, including lossless FLAC, ALAC (M4A), WAV, AIFF/AIF, DSF, and DFF (DSD), as well as lossy formats like MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus, and WMA. Embedded tags and metadata are scanned automatically to build your local index.
What client apps can I use with PureStream?
PureStream is the dedicated streaming server for PurePlayer. It is designed around the Subsonic and OpenSubsonic standards, so third-party clients that support those protocols can connect; the features available in each client depend on the endpoints it uses. Check the release notes for the current compatibility list.
Will my music files ever be uploaded to the cloud?
Never. PureStream operates on a strict local-first philosophy. Your audio tracks, album artwork, lyrics, and play histories remain entirely on your own computer. Our cloud control plane only assists with device pairing credentials and subscription validation, never accessing your music.
Is remote access available right now?
Remote access is currently under active development and testing. Initial releases will focus on direct peer-to-point tunnels, where connectivity depends on the NAT environments of both networks. Encrypted relay fallback for strict network environments is planned for future updates.
How is PureStream priced?
Local network streaming is completely free and requires no account. Remote network access and future multi-device family sharing will be offered through simple subscriptions managed securely via the Mac App Store and Microsoft Store. Exact pricing will be announced at launch.
Can I stream music stored on a NAS or external drive?
Yes. As long as your external hard drive or NAS network share is mounted by your operating system as a local folder path (such as a mounted volume on macOS or a mapped network drive on Windows), PureStream can scan and index it. The app does not include built-in SMB or WebDAV clients.
What are the hardware and library size requirements?
PureStream runs on modern macOS and Windows computers. Its database and indexing engine are optimized to handle large private collections of over one hundred thousand tracks with responsive paging and search. A standard desktop or laptop easily handles local streaming and real-time transcoding.
Tech and privacy note
PureStream is designed for offline local processing and does not depend on cloud transcoding. Read ourprivacy policyfor full data-handling details.
