How to Play DFF Files on Mac

DFF is a DSD audio format that no built-in macOS player can decode. PurePlayer Hi-Res plays DFF files directly, passes native DSD to a DoP-capable DAC up to DSD256, and falls back to real-time DSD-to-PCM conversion when needed.

Why DFF needs a dedicated player on Mac

Built-in support isn't the whole story.

DFF stores DSD audio, and no built-in macOS player decodes it — the format requires a dedicated player with a DSD engine. For serious listening it also needs bit-perfect output and a way to deliver native DSD to an external DAC, not just a decoder that outputs PCM.

How PurePlayer plays it

From folder to playback in five steps.

PurePlayer Hi-Res is a Hi-Res local music player for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that plays local music files including DFF. Its DSD path offers native passthrough (DoP) to an external DAC up to DSD256; when the device does not support DoP, DSD converts to PCM in real time for playback. Bit-Perfect output follows each track's sample rate with no unnecessary resampling, and Exclusive Mode on Mac takes over the output device. Native passthrough, Exclusive Mode, and automatic sample-rate switching are Player Pro features; local playback with all-format decoding is free.

  1. 1

Open PurePlayer on your Mac and add a music source — point it at the local folder holding your DFF files.

  2. 2

Let it build the index from tags and covers; rescan incrementally whenever the folder changes.

  3. 3

Browse the library by song, album, artist, composer, or work and press play — DFF decodes directly.

  4. 4

Enable Bit-Perfect output so the sample rate follows each track; on Mac, Exclusive Mode can take over the output device.

  5. 5

With a DoP-capable DAC, turn on DoP passthrough for native DSD up to DSD256; otherwise DSD converts to PCM in real time.

PurePlayer Hi-Res is a free download for iPhone, iPad, and Mac — local playback with all-format decoding works out of the box, and Player Pro is a one-time purchase with a 14-day trial. See PurePlayer Hi-Res

FAQ

Can macOS play DFF files natively?

No — no built-in macOS player decodes DFF. A dedicated Hi-Res player like PurePlayer Hi-Res is needed to play DFF files on Mac.

Do DSF and DFF play the same way?

Yes. Both are DSD formats supported by the player: they decode directly, can pass through natively over DoP up to DSD256, and fall back to real-time PCM conversion on devices without DoP support.

What does DoP do and what are its limits?

DoP packages the raw DSD data and sends it to the DAC as-is, up to DSD256. With DoP on, the equalizer and volume control are disabled — any digital processing would corrupt the stream — so volume is controlled on the DAC or amp.

Does the player work without an external DAC?

Yes. Playing on the Mac's built-in output works fine — DSD converts to PCM in real time when there is no DoP path.
