How to Play DSF Files on Mac

DSF is a DSD audio format with no native player built into macOS. PurePlayer Hi-Res decodes DSF files directly, can pass native DSD to an external DAC over DoP up to DSD256, and converts to PCM in real time when the device does not support it.

Why DSF needs a dedicated player on Mac

Built-in support isn't the whole story.

macOS has no built-in player that decodes DSF, so double-clicking a DSF file gets you nowhere — the format needs a dedicated player with DSD decoding. For audiophile listening the format also demands more than basic playback: bit-perfect output, automatic sample-rate switching, and a path that can carry native DSD to an external DAC.

How PurePlayer plays it

From folder to playback in five steps.

PurePlayer Hi-Res is a Hi-Res local music player for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that plays your own music files — DSF included — from local folders. For DSF playback it offers native DSD passthrough (DoP) to an external DAC, up to DSD256, and when the device does not support DoP it converts DSD to PCM in real time for playback. Bit-Perfect output follows each track's sample rate with no unnecessary resampling, and on Mac an Exclusive Mode can take over the output device. Native passthrough, Exclusive Mode, and automatic sample-rate switching are Player Pro features; local playback with all-format decoding works out of the box for free.

  1. 1

Open PurePlayer on your Mac and add a music source — pick the local folder that holds your DSF files.

  2. 2

Let it build the index: the app reads tags and covers to build the library, and you can rescan incrementally later.

  3. 3

Browse by song, album, artist, composer, or work, then press play — DSF files decode directly.

  4. 4

For the cleanest output, enable Bit-Perfect so the sample rate follows each track; on Mac you can also turn on Exclusive Mode to bypass the system mixer.

  5. 5

With a DoP-capable external DAC, enable DoP passthrough to send native DSD up to DSD256; without one, DSD converts to PCM in real time.

PurePlayer Hi-Res is a free download for iPhone, iPad, and Mac — local playback with all-format decoding works out of the box, and Player Pro is a one-time purchase with a 14-day trial. See PurePlayer Hi-Res

FAQ

Can macOS play DSF files natively?

No built-in macOS player decodes DSF, so a dedicated Hi-Res player is needed. PurePlayer Hi-Res plays DSF files directly on Mac.

Can I send native DSD to my DAC instead of converting to PCM?

Yes — with a DoP-capable external DAC, DoP passthrough (a Player Pro feature) sends native DSD to the DAC, up to DSD256. If the device does not support DoP, the app converts DSD to PCM in real time for playback.

Why is the equalizer unavailable while DoP is on?

DoP packages the raw DSD data and sends it to the DAC as-is. Any digital processing in between would corrupt it, so the equalizer and volume control are disabled in DoP mode. Keep the app volume at maximum and control it on the DAC or amp.

Does it also play DFF files?

Yes. The DSD formats DSF and DFF are both supported, with the same DoP passthrough up to DSD256.
